Montreal-based artist, Marigold Santos’ first solo show in Atlantic Canada, Coven Ring, will open at the Khyber Centre for Art on September 28, 8pm.
Through the works that comprise Coven Ring, Marigold Santos continues her exploration of notions of transformation, fragmentation and the multiplicity that is an inherent part of the self. These are rooted in an underlying visceral exploration of ‘home’ and ‘identity’.
In this exhibition, Santos creates a ‘personal mythological landscape’ drawing upon elements from her Filipino heritage that she combines with Western folklore. She applies these to images drawn from physically demanding sports such as boxing. The result confronts the viewer with a tension that forces self-examination of the multiple dimensions of his- or herself.
An interdisciplinary artist, Santos produces drawn and printed works, sculpture, animation and sound. Santos completed her BFA at the University of Calgary in 2006, and her MFA at Concordia University in 2011. She has received numerous awards and her work has been exhibited in Canada, the USA and Japan.
Coven Ring opens with a reception at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 28, 2012 at the Khyber Centre for the Arts at 1588 Barrington Street and runs until October 26, 2012. The artist will be in attendance.
