About us:

Starting off on a small scale using digital equipment The Carbon Arc is working towards being a nightly independent cinema space with concessions and room to work and hang out. Our focus is on creating a friendly environment where all kinds of people can gather to enjoy each other’s company and discuss a film before or after the show with a drink, sit alone in the dark with a bag of popcorn, or even make a film while drinking a coffee in the lobby. The Carbon Arc looks forward to showing your films and films that you want to see.

This summer the Carbon Arc screened 7 features and 2 shorts programs. This fall we are moving to the 3rd Floor of the Khyber building, Wormwood’s Cinema’s original home. Mid-October we will resume screening innovative feature films every Thursday at 8pm until Christmas along with shorts or special programming on other nights of the week!

Some features we will screen this fall are: The Adventures of Faustus Bidgood, Grown-Up Movie Star, The Searchers, The Docks of New York, and Jason Eisener will host Gremlins around Christmas time.

Saturday, Oct 16th, 6pm-Midnight, Nocturne: Art at Night Festival: A program of short films will loop on the 3rd floor! – Please get in touch if you have a fun or Khyber related short you’d like to screen! Deadline for submissions is Oct 1st.

Please see our Facebook Group, drop by the Khyber, or email Siloën at siloend@gmail.com for more info, updates and details about us and our upcoming fall schedule, or if you’d like to volunteer!

Here’s what happened this summer:

Thurs July 15th – D.I.Y. Opening Celebration
Sneak Previews of soon to be released local films, and shorts inspired by the theme: ‘An independent cinema in Halifax!’ were followed by dancing and mingling with Seth Huntley & Benn Ross. Hosted by Siloën Daley. Thanks to all who attended and made opening night a huge success with a full house and then some!

Thurs July 22nd – Pride Week
Tom Fitzgerald introduced his Docu-Comedy ‘Beefcake’ about Bob Mizer’s muscle magazine for the film’s 10th year anniversary! Tom and others on the Beefcake crew then held an intimate Q&A. This was a fundraiser for Plutonium Playhouse.

Thurs July 29th – Fantasy Horror
Jason Eisener introduced ‘The Monster Squad’, one of the films that inspired him to become a filmmaker. The film was preceded by a variety of Jason’s film work and choice trailers along with trivia and prizes. Jason is in post-production on ‘Hobo with a Shotgun’. Another great Carbon Arc turn out!

Thurs August 5th – Cult Film
Coast film critic Mark Palermo introduced ‘Torque’ a B-movie biker epic. The audience corroborated with Mark that Torque kicks ass! Palermo’s music video for Wordburglar, “The Route”, followed the screening along with other eclectic vidbits.

Thurs August 12th – Feminist Films
Filmmaker Andrea Dorfman introduced her short film ‘Nine’. Then Sook-Yin Lee, host of CBC’s Definitely Not the Opera, introduced her first feature, ‘Year of the Carnivore’ to an excited full house. After the film Jan Miller hosted Sook-Yin who wowed us with exciting stories & Q&A! Thanks all!!

Thurs August 19th – Avant-Garde Cinema
NSCAD Film Professor Bruce Barber, who has written on Greenaway, told stories and antidotes in his enjoyable introduction to Peter Greenaway’s ‘The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover’.

Thurs August 26th – Documentary Night
Filmmaker Chuck Lapp gave us updates and presented the beautiful & award winning Chinese Canadian doc ‘Up the Yangtze’.

Thurs September 2nd – Nova Scotia Comedy 1
