Robert Hengeveld, Staging the Gap, September 8-October 20, 2007

In Staging the Gap artist Robert Hengeveld recreates an outdoor concert stage at a miniature scale, animating it with light and smoke. The effects are programmed by electrical circuits and triggered by an inaudible CD containing the Queen track Bohemian Rhapsody – a song chosen for its ranging style and its prevalence in Karaoke culture, a culture which engages our society’s desire for the spectacle of performance. Eight audio headsets accompany the model stage, each playing very different soundtracks specifically created to play back with the virtual show. The work explores the relationship between audio and the visual, and the roles they play in structuring our understanding of the world.
